Someone once told me that if I make my cup smaller than it will overflow more easily. I can truly say that whether or not my cup is smaller it has mostly definitely overflowed many times these past two weeks.
I arrived safely in Uganda about two weeks ago but it feels like I have been here for much longer. Around every market corner and in every home I have entered I have been met with nothing but kindness and amazing hospitality which is so typical of many African countries!
After a week in Kampala, during which I attended a traditional wedding, began learning the language and tried many different and new foods, I boarded a bus with a friend and was carried (over paved and dirt roads) to northern Uganda to a town called Kitgum. I have been here now for almost a week and have met many people and walked many kilometers.
Today I had the privilege of walking with a host cousin to visit her family on the outskirts of town. While there we were served lunch and watched a Nigerian movie (they are very popular here and all have names like "Stronger than Pain", and "A Dangerous Desire"). We also received the gift of sugar cane and a live chicken
.
I am finding that the sun is very intense here and understand why some women carry umbrellas (especially since I have now been sunburned twice).
I am blessed to have my own hut (thatched roof and all) with running water and a flush toilet! And I am so lucky that I can enjoy coke from a glass bottle (because it is better than from a can).
Peace.
