Guidelines for MCC staff web pages and blogs (This document supplements the MCC Internet usage policy #905 and 906) Introduction For many people, including MCC staff, the Internet has become part of daily life and is viewed as a primary personal communications tool. MCC encourages staff, short and long term volunteer and local community service workers to utilize the Internet when communicating with friends, family and church community during their assignment. However, Internet usage should be considered in the context of MCC personnel policy that says MCC workers are representatives of Mennonite and Brethren in Christ churches. The following guidelines call staff to maintain the content of their web pages and blogs in a manner consistent with how the MCC and its constituent churches view Christian life and service in the world. Basic guidelines for personal web pages and blogs 1. The Internet is a public forum in which MCC staff, volunteer or local service workers represent MCC, its partners and supporting Mennonite and Brethren in Christ churches. 2. MCC will make available a personal web and blog site on the MCC Web site for each worker who wants one and encourages them to develop these pages for communicating about their work and experience. If workers have personal web pages or blog sites outside of the MCC pages, MCC will link to their pages from the MCC Web site. 3. The content of all personal web pages and blogs, whether in the MCC Web site or separate from the MCC Web site, are expected to fall within MCC policy related to MCC workers being representatives of the Mennonite and Brethren in Christ church and policies related to internet usage such as decency, appropriateness, use of vulgarity, negative comments about MCC, its partners, staff, the church and other faiths. (See HR Policy 906) 4. The content is also to be in harmony with MCC policy when speaking about and visually representing poverty and the poor. (See HR Policy 905 “Reporting about the poor in North America and other parts of the world.) 5. When establishing personal web pages and blogs, please inform your supervisor and MCC Communications of your plans. Work closely with your supervisor about your goals for your pages and make sure the URL is listed on the MCC Web site blog pages. 6. Expect that your supervisor and MCC Communications Dept. will from time to time visit your web pages. Neither your supervisor nor Communications Dept. will edit your site. 7. Send a link of your most recent post to Communications Dept. and the MCC web editors when you believe you have interesting stories to share more broadly. 8. Personal web pages and blogs will be removed from the MCC Web site within a month after of the end of a term of service and sent to the worker on a disk. MCC Web site personal web pages and blogs MCC has personalized web pages and blogs available at no cost to MCC workers as part of its Web site. MCC strongly encourages workers interested in utilizing the Internet to develop their personal web pages and blogs on the MCC site. Setting up personal web pages and blogs on the MCC Web site has the following advantages. 1. You become an active part of the MCC family on-line, making it easier for you to find others or be located by MCC workers, family and friends. 2. You will benefit from the more than 75,000 unique visitors to the general MCC site each month. 3. From time to time, your web pages could be highlighted on the MCC homepage and linked to throughout the MCC Web site. 4. Your MCC web pages are advertisement free. 5. You gain the ability to blog, upload photos, stories, audio and video. Signing up for an MCC personalize web page and blog can be done prior to orientation, during orientation or at anytime during your assignment. Contact the MCC web editor or send a note to MCC Communications Dept. for more information. Issues of copyright on the MCC Web site Any work published on the MCC Web site personal web pages and blogs will be copyrighted by MCC during the worker’s term of service. Once the term of service has ended copyright will be transferred to the former worker. MCC copyright does not extend to personal web pages and web blogs outside the MCC Web site. Having MCC hold copyright assures protection of web content under intellectual property rights law. Parties interested in using content from personal web pages and blogs must gain permission from MCC Communications Dept. and the worker who posted the work. At the end of the worker’s term of service MCC will, upon request, provide a disk of their web pages. Guidelines developed by MCC Communications Dept. May 23, 2007
